I stare at the rows of books that line the shelves in Max’s house, surprised by both the titles and that someone had broken into my flat. He’s got all the classics like Dickens and Hemingway, and an entire section dedicated to sports biographies. I run my hands over their spines, loving the way they feel under my touch.

The floorboards creak behind me, and I glance back to Max who’s in the doorway, a shoulder pressed into the frame, hands in the pockets of his jeans, one leg crossed over the other at the ankles.

Sweet Lord, how can someone look so captivating and be casual? He’s the hottest man I’ve ever seen, and that’s why I fell head over heels for him six months ago. Why I struggled to believe that he’d ditched me, but I told myself that men like him aren’t interested in girls like me.

And now, he stares at me like I’m a meal he’s about to devour. My nipples pebble against my bra at the way he licks his lips, studying me intently.

“Not the image you had in mind, right?” he purrs.

His words catch me off guard as I try to work out if he’s talking about me, noticing how especially gorgeous he looks in the dim light of the study. When his chin lifts and gestures to the shelves of books behind me, I give a huffed exhale. “Oh yeah,” I answer. “Had no idea you were a hockey player by day and bookworm by night.”

He bursts into laughter, that sound covering me in delicious goosebumps. Maybe it was a mistake coming here, seeing how we’ve been at his place barely fifteen minutes and I’m already struggling to control my thoughts.

“Reading has always been an escape for me. Anyway, want a tour? I’ve ordered some pizza and I’ve got your bags in the spare room. Or we can just settle in for the night as you’ve had enough excitement.”

“I’ll take a cup of tea, if you have any?”

He grins. “Tea, huh? I can manage that.”

I follow him into the kitchen and he busies himself, so I use that moment to really take in my surroundings. Despite the home being enormous and close to a mansion, there’s a sense of warmth because something about it feels lived in. There are photos of Max on the wall from his hockey games, holding trophies, him and the team, then there’s one with a younger him and a woman who bears a striking resemblance to him. It has to be his mom. He looks so happy.

The kitchen could come right out of a lifestyle magazine, with granite countertops and appliances in every corner. In the middle of the room is a bar seating area.

I always knew that hockey players who played in the NHL earned extraordinary amounts, but seeing this spectacular home where Max seemed to live alone, it put everything into perspective how rich this guy really is.

I’ve been living hand to mouth for the past year, even before I moved to Canada.
